We’ve been a long time without any news on the Pokémon Sword/Shield expansion but last week we finally found out the release date – 17th June, less than one week away!
Considering it’s so close, I wanted to write a little post on the things I’m most looking forward to based off what we’ve seen so far.
I’m guessing off the most recent trailer that this will be a choice, so we’ll choose one or the other at first much like any choosing of a starter. I will 100% be going for Squirtle, just look at Blastoise’s G-Max move below:
Blastoise’s special G-Max move is called G-Max Cannonade, which deals damage when it hits along with four turns following to any Pokémon that isn’t Water type.
Venusaur isn’t getting left out though, being treated to G-Max Vine Whip. This works in the same way by dealing damage for four turns following the initial hit as long as the Pokémon being attacked isn’t a Grass type.
And we’re also being treated to special G-Max moves for the starters of Sword/Shield! Similar to that of Blastoise and Venusaur, all of them have very powerful G-Max moves that ignore any effects of the target’s Ability. Rillaboom gets G-Max Drum Solo, Cinderace has G-Max Fireball and Inteleon will have Hydrosnipe (my personal favourite which links heavily to it being based off a spy).
My favourite bit about the trailer was seeing so many awesome Mons returning! Personal favourites of these include Rockruff, Swablu, Absol, Shinx and Taurus. Shinx and Absol will be two of the first I go shiny hunting for.
Here’s an image showing some of the confirmed returning Pokémon so far:
Hopefully those seen and mentioned so far won’t be the only returning Pokémon though, some of my favourites I’d like to see include these Mons:
Greninja would be a great addition for battles! Mostly though I just love the designs of the above Mons.
Our first glimpse of returning legendary Pokémon was Giratina right at the beginning of the trailer, but close to the end, we get to see Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Groudon, Kyogre and more! I really really hope that these won’t just be done in the same way as the recent Mewtwo raid event (in that we won’t get a chance to catch) but it’ll definitely be an exciting part of the Crown Tundra DLC!
From the most recent trailer, I’m hoping we’ll just have to wait until the actual release date for more Galarian forms of Pokémon to be announced. We saw Galarian Slowbro and the other three Pokemon of note were Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.
The Kanto legendary birds look great in their Galarian forms! Their base types have also changed, becoming the following:
- Articuno – Psychic/Flying-type
- Zapdos – Fighting/Flying-type
- Moltres – Dark/Flying-type
Hands down my favourite looking has got to be Articuno; but I love the redesigns for all of them!
I’ve loved Kubfu since the first time we saw him in all honesty, he’s just adorable. If you’re familiar with Bleach, he’s reminded me of a dark version of Kon from the beginning (and I love Kon).
Whether you evolve him into Single Strike or Rapid Strike Urshifu will depend on choices you make throughout the game, but with Single Strike being Dark/Fighting-type and Rapid being Water/Fighting I think I’ll be going for Rapid Strike.
The recent trailer showed us two new Regi forms – Regidrago and Regieleki. As their names suggest, Regidrago is a Dragon-type and Regieleki an Electric-type.
Interestingly, Regidrago is just the head and Regieleki just the body. This fits in fairly well with the fossil Mons of Sword/Shield which seem to have their heads and bodies swapped.
Are these two new forms also hinting at a Galarian Regigigas? One that has its true, unrestricted ability? Or will it be able to fuse similar to Kyurem and Necrozma? Only time will tell but I’m excited to see if we do get one!
