If you’re anything like me then Pokémon GO is one of the main things keeping you sane right now, so I wanted to write a little blog post based on what we all have to look forward to in May because in my opinion it looks awesome!
Each week will be split up into the first four generations, with great bonuses included and the potential for a lot of shiny Pokémon (by far my personal favourite thing about the events)! There will be special timed research tasks each week, with the last reward encounter for them being a legendary with a special move, and there is a potential for a shiny legendary every time.
The first week starts tomorrow (May 1st) at 1pm and ends Friday 8th at 1pm, being Kanto week and meaning lots of beloved 1st gen Pokémon. Friday 8th May to Friday 15th May will be Johto, Hoenn is May 15th to May 22nd and, finally, Sinnoh will be May 22nd to May 29th. The local times for every start and end will always be 1pm.
Can you even say that there’s a Pokemon GO event on if there isn’t a special Pikachu to go after? I love what they’ve decided to go with (for the most part) because they’ve used the results of the top Pokémon from each generation included in the event and given Pikachu a hat of the top Mon!
These top Mons are as follows:
– Kanto: Charizard
– Johto: Umbreon
– Hoenn: Rayquaza
– Sinnoh: Lucario
There will be shiny Pikachu available too, but it would seem that the Pokémon hats will not reflect that (I’d prefer if they did, but either way I’d be happy with my first shiny Pikachu regardless).
One thing though… they do look a little bit weird. I’ll still be going after all of them (especially Umbreon and Lucario) but… yeah.
Each week we’ll have different Pokémon originally discovered in the regions as more increased spawns, with the following having been specified as being more common:
– Kanto: Venonat and Chansey
– Johto: Dunsparce and Skarmory
– Hoenn: Skitty and Zangoose(/Seviper if based in America)
– Sinnoh: Cherubi and Glameow
These increased spawns also link into the new shiny Pokémon being added to the game! Being: Venonat, Dunsparce, Skitty and Glameow along with any related evolutions.
I’m most excited about Venonat and Skitty because their shiny forms are so pretty! I like Glameow also but I’m not a fan of Purugly in general so I might aim purely for Glameow as shiny!
Special 7km Eggs
We’ll also be getting special eggs during these events, and many have the possibility of being shiny (I’ll bold these)! One thing though, I really wish they’d made these 2km eggs instead. Even with the current ½ distance to hatch its not the easiest thing to hatch many 7km eggs! I’ll likely be pacing around the house a lot attempting to though.
Nevertheless, the special hatches include:
– Kanto: Venonat, Machop, Onix, Lickitung, Tangela, Scyther, Pinsir, Lapras, and Eevee
– Johto: Chinchou, Yanma, Girafarig, Pineco, Dunsparce, Gligar, Shuckle, Skarmory, and Phanpy
– Hoenn: Lotad, Slakoth, Nincada, Skitty, Sableye, Mawile, Trapinch, Feebas, and Clamperl
– Sinnoh: Cranidos, Shieldon, Glameow, Chingling, Bonsly, Happiny, Gible, Munchlax, Riolu, and Mantyke
Personally, I’m really hoping I can finally get lucky with a shiny Riolu! I have a shiny Lucario on Pokémon Sword so I’d probably never evolve Riolu (unless, by some miracle, I got a second). A shiny Gible would be awesome also but I’ll settle for just getting a standard Gible to contribute towards my first Garchomp!
These events will all include special research tasks (which I’ll talk about later) and the final reward is an encounter with a legendary Pokémon from the region, three of which will have an event-exclusive attack and all have the possibility of being shiny. These Mons are:
– Mewtwo with Psystrike
– Ho-Oh with event-exclusive attack Earthquake
– Groudon with event-exclusive attack Fire Punch
– Cresselia with event-exclusive attack Grass Knot
We’ll get a range of bonuses throughout the event which are sure to keep people interested! They’ll help with levelling up a lot and it’ll be a great addition to the rewards for each task also:
– Kanto week: 2× Catch XP, 2× Raid XP, and 2× Hatch XP bonuses will be active
– Johto week: 2× Catch Stardust and 2× Raid Stardust bonuses will be active
– Hoenn week: The distance needed to hatch an Egg once it’s been placed in an Incubator and the distance needed to earn Buddy Candy will be halved
– Sinnoh week: One-hour Star Piece duration, one-hour Incense duration, and one-hour Lucky Egg duration bonuses will be active
The Hoenn week will be especially useful for hatching eggs, as the already existing ½ hatch time should also still be in place at that point. Lots of pacing around the house if the situation with coronavirus hasn’t improved by then…
Based off what people have shared so far (there was a glitch that meant some have already been given the Kanto tasks accidentally) these events are hopefully all going to be super quick and easy to complete!
Tasks such as ‘Transfer 3 Pokémon’, ‘Catch 3 Pokémon’ etc are included which should make these some quick-fire ways to build up your Dex, with reward encounters being common also and the possibility of adding to shiny collections!
If you finish all of the tasks…
The overall reward for completing the tasks in May will be the unlocking of a special research event from Wednesday 3rd June. Unlike the previous tasks these won’t be time-limited, which suggests they might be more intensive, but on completion of all four sets of tasks for this you can each five Rare Candies and reward encounters with Galarian Meowth, Galarian Stunfisk, and Genesect.
So we’re seeing the first gen 8 Pokémon introduced into the game! From the beginning of the special event until June 8th, everyone (regardless of whether or not you’ve completed the May tasks) will have access to special 7km egg hatches and Pokémon from the Unova region appearing more in the wild, with the special egg hatches including:
– Galarian Meowth
– Galarian Zigzagoon
– Galarian Darumaka
– Galarian Stunfisk
I’m really glad we’ll have more Unova spawns – my current Dex is 44 registrations off a gold medal and I’d love to get that sorted ASAP!
I’ll be posting more Pokémon-related blog posts in the next couple of weeks, and there’s most likely going to be a large emphasis on my shiny collection so far so if you’re interested make sure you follow this site for more updates!
