Book Haul | January 2018

Well, January is over and it feels like it’s lasted a lifetime! I’ve been accepted for a lot of NetGalley ARCs and I’ve read the books due to be released this month already (I’ll be starting on March releases as soon as possible).

I was also very very lucky to get to attend my first book blogger event at TEENSgate! More about that below but it was a great event and it was so lovely to meet people.

NetGalley ARCs

Your Creative Career by Anna Sabino (Release Date: January 22nd 2018)
I’m glad I was able to read this book, it helped give me some ideas for my Etsy store and was a very motivating read for me! Full review here.

Book of Souls (Gods of Egypt #1) by Nadine Nightingale (Release Date: February 9th 2018)
Fantasy and Ancient Egypt? This was begging for me to read it! It was a really intriguing read and I loved the way two different timelines were intertwined. Full review here.

The Wren Hunt by Mary Watson (Release Date: February 8th 2018)
I found this a little difficult to get into but once the action began I was hooked on it. It was interesting to have a story with two different groups of magic wielding people in a long clash in Ireland, and the plot twists had me hooked. Full review here.

• To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo (Release Date: March 6th 2018)
Fairytales and retellings are possibly one of my favourite things lately… and the synopsis for this has an air of The Little Mermaid about it so I had to request it! Review to come.

The Witch Doesn’t Burn in this One (Women are some kind of magic #2) by Amanda Lovelace (Release Date: March 6th 2018)
I finally read the first in this poetry series this month, and I loved it so much I needed to read the next in the series as soon as possible! Luckily it’s on NetGalley as read now currently. Review to come.

The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton (Release Date: March 13th 2018)
I love books about witches (in case you haven’t noticed… I guess most would have!) so I’m definitely excited to read this book. Review to come.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young (Release Date: April 24th 2018)
Why did I request this? Female Viking story. Basically Lagertha. I really hope that following on from the success of the TV show Vikings we get more Viking stories, and this having a female main character means I can’t wait to read it! Review to come.

TEENSgate Blogger Event

I was able to go to the TEENSgate event at Deansgate Waterstones (sponsored by Penguin) on January 28th and it was so great! I met a few lovely people I’d spoken to online and got to talk about books and fan girl over them. The event was ran by Kimi and Fiona and we were given copies of two books from Penguin – The Truth and Lies and Ella Black and Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. Both YA books – I’m really excited to read them as they aren’t books I’d usually think to pick up, but I’ve been seeing them around on Twitter/Instagram so I’m definitely interested!

To make things even more amazing, Kimi and Fiona donated some books also and I seriously can’t wait to get stuck into them!

The Truth and Lies of Ella Black by Emily Barr
I’m definitely intrigued by the synopsis for this, and the fact that ’40 days until she dies’ is written on the cover.

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (Love, Simon) by Becky Albertalli
I’ve seen a lot of people talking about the film adaptation of this book on Twitter lately so I’m excited to read this one too! I think this will definitely call for a movie review to go with it if I love it as much as others have too.

Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die #1) by Danielle Page
I’ve been eyeing this up for a while now (again with the retellings, I’m a sucker for them). The idea of the Good Witches being bad and the Wicked Witches being good too… I was a massive fan of the Maleficent movie so I’m sure I’ll love this book.

Frozen (Heart of Dread #1) by Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnston
Vegas and magic… that seems like a pretty good mix!

Sweetfreak by Sophie McKenzie
This is a young adult contemporary revolving around online bullying, having at one point (along with most my age) been the subject of online bullying this grabbed my interest.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1) by Jessica Townsend
This is actually an ARC and it has to be one of the prettiest ever (I really like covers okay, you can usually judge a book by it’s cover too…) but besides that! Within the synopsis is: ‘a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world–but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.’ I love when books have trials and tests in for the main character to go against.

Starborn (The Worldmaker Trilogy #1) by Lucy Hounsom
I’ve seen people talking about this trilogy lately so I really wanted to see what it was about.

Prisoner of Ice and Snow (Prisoner of Ice and Snow #1) by Ruth Lauren
I love when stories have a strong emphasis on sisterhood and friendships, to top it off this is yet another fantasy read too!

And then the rest…

Okay… I wrote all of these out but then basically there were 16, a lot were charity/sale finds but then I also got a few free/99p eBooks. If you’re after a good place to find deals such as that then check out BookBub.com.

Overall, I’m so happy with this month’s haul! I know it’ll take me forever to get through but my bookcase is looking so awesome!

Have you got any new books this month?
What do you think of my haul?

  1. So many books! I’ve been seeing a ton of people reading and talking about To Kill A Kingdom, I think I’ll definitely need to look that one up soon. I just finished The Witch Doesn’t Burn In This One and didn’t really enjoy it, not my type of poetry I guess. 😦 Hopefully you enjoy it though, especially since you liked Lovelace’s other collection. I can’t wait to read your reviews of all of these new books, great post!

    1. Yeah same! Definitely excited to read it but I’m trying to be strategic about the order I go through my TBR in so got a couple to read before xD I actually read through the witch doesn’t burn in this one once already but I’m gonna write the review after a second time, it didn’t hit me quite as hard as the first but I still though it was pretty empowering xD
      And thank you! ❤
